A CIVIL ACTION
The Case "Heard Round the World"
Attorney Schlichtmann gained international recognition for his pioneering work in the Woburn, Massachusetts contaminated drinking water case. Schlichtmann’s courageous representation of eight Woburn, Massachusetts families against two of the world’s largest corporations, WR Grace and Beatrice Foods, for contaminating the Woburn drinking water and causing an epidemic of childhood cancer was portrayed in the international best seller A Civil Action by Jonathan Harr (Random House) and a major motion picture starring John Travolta as Schlichtmann.
The Woburn case was the first of its kind charging that industrial pollution caused cancer in a community. In order to maintain this precedent setting environmental case, Schlichtmann had to bring together a unique team of lawyers, professionals, and experts from many fields and specialties. The groundbreaking engineering, medical, scientific, and legal work spawned numerous articles, texts, studies, forums, and symposiums in both the professional and public arena and led to changes in both federal and state environmental laws and regulations.
We have gathered together from the multitude a sampling of some of the more interesting material, links, and sites that are the legacy of this profoundly important case whose impact continues to ripple through law, science, and society.
